From the fairways of Heron Lakes to the open acreage near Carter Lake, Berthoud rewards craftsmanship that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Berthoud isn’t one kind of place, and it isn’t one kind of client. Some of our clients here want a home as elegant and considered as the neighborhood it’s part of, one that holds its own next to a clubhouse, with a wine vault, overlooking the fairway. Others want thirty-five acres, a view of Longs Peak, and room for horses, with a home that never competes with the land it sits on. Both deserve craftsmanship built for exactly what they’re going for.
We know this town from more than one angle. We spent three and a half years on the heavy timber work at the Heron Lakes clubhouse, built the Lone Tree Grill at the turn, and provided the heavy timber scope for some of the finest custom homes in the community. We’ve also built for clients on the acreage out toward Carter Lake, where the draw isn’t a golf course, it’s space, quiet, and a mountain view that doesn’t quit.
From rustic elegance to modern minimalism, a Berthoud home should feel unmistakably crafted for the site it’s on and the life you actually live, never staged, never showy, just genuinely well built.
Heron Lakes’ own design guidelines lean toward mountain rustic and Colorado mine-inspired architecture — styles built for exposed timber joinery and honest materials. We’re not adapting to fit the neighborhood; the neighborhood already wants what we do best.
A three-and-a-half years heavy timber project — the kind of scope and coordination that only comes together with real craftsmanship and real planning.
Built to the same standard as the clubhouse, because a golf course doesn't get a lesser version of the neighborhood's design language just because it's the halfway house.
Some of Heron Lakes' finest homes carry our timber work — proof this isn't a one-off commercial job, but an ongoing relationship with the neighborhood.
West of town, toward Carter Lake, the properties look different, 5 to 35 acres, hobby farms, horse setups, gated communities like Sedona Hills, and view lots looking straight at the Front Range and Longs Peak. Many of these parcels sit outside a metro district, with more flexible covenants and room to build a home (and outbuildings) that works as hard as the land does. We’ve worked on several homes out there, applying the kind of building-science that decides how a house handles this site’s wind and temperature swings for the next fifty years.
Barns, arenas, shops, and guest structures are often part of the vision here, not an afterthought — we design the main home and the working buildings as one coherent project.
Many Carter Lake-area properties run on well and septic rather than municipal utilities. We plan mechanical systems around what your specific parcel supports.
Elevated, open lots here mean wind and sun exposure worth designing around — the same building-science thinking we apply to our mountain-community projects, just closer to town.
Carter Lake itself — boating, fishing, quiet mornings on the water — is part of why people build out here. The home should feel like it belongs to that lifestyle, not compete with it.

Dave Kaplan and his team are amazing. They built our dream timber frame home exactly to our specifications, striking the perfect balance between guiding us and letting us take the lead. His team wove in nice touches, like a ‘frame raising’ party that gave us lifelong memories building this house with our kids.
