Custom Homes & Timber Framing in Poudre Canyon & Rist Canyon
Building in the canyons takes more than a good set of plans. It takes a partner who understands the terrain, the access, and the history of this land.
Poudre Canyon and Rist Canyon are not easy places to build. That’s exactly why the homes here matter more.
Steep grades, narrow switchback roads, and limited staging space shape every decision before the first shovel hits the ground. Many properties sit on well and septic, off the grid or at the edge of it, with power and access that a Fort Collins lot simply doesn’t have to plan around. The building season is short. The margin for error is smaller.
And for many homeowners in these canyons, there’s a more personal reason the details matter. Rist Canyon and the upper Poudre have both been through wildfire; the High Park Fire in 2012, the Cameron Peak Fire in 2020. Some of our neighbors here are rebuilding. Others are building for the first time, with defensible space and fire-resilient construction as part of the plan from day one, not an afterthought bolted on at the end.
We don’t treat that as a checkbox. We treat it as part of the craft.
From rustic elegance to modern minimalism, a canyon home should feel like it belongs to the land it sits on — built to withstand what this landscape can bring, and built beautifully enough that you never think about it once you’re home.
What the Canyon Actually Requires
Site access and logistics.
Narrow, winding roads and steep driveways change how materials, equipment, and crews get to your site. We plan sequencing and staging around your specific road and lot — not a generic build schedule.
Off-grid and edge-of-grid systems.
Well, septic, propane, and backup power are often the norm here, not the exception. We design the building envelope and mechanical systems to work with those realities, not against them.
Wildfire resilience.
Defensible space, ember-resistant materials, roof and vent detailing, and siting decisions all play a role in a fire-aware canyon home. We build this thinking into design from the start, alongside — not instead of — the craftsmanship and natural materials you want.
Exposure and microclimate.
Canyon walls create their own wind patterns, sun pockets, and cold-air drainage. A high-performance envelope matters here as much as anywhere in Northern Colorado — arguably more.
A short build season.
Weather windows in the canyons close fast. Careful preconstruction planning keeps your project moving when conditions allow, instead of losing time to surprises.
Our Plan for Your Masonville Home
1
Start the Conversation
Tell us about your site, your land, and what you’re hoping to build — whether that’s a first home, a rebuild, or a long-held vision finally taking shape.
2
Design the Plan
We walk your property, understand its access, exposure, and constraints, and design a home — and a build sequence — that fits the land instead of fighting it.
Build with Confidence
One in-house team manages design, budget, and construction from start to finish, so you’re never left coordinating between people who’ve never seen your driveway.

Dave Kaplan and his team are amazing. They built our dream timber frame home exactly to our specifications, striking the perfect balance between guiding us and letting us take the lead. His team wove in nice touches, like a ‘frame raising’ party that gave us lifelong memories building this house with our kids.
