There are a lot of buildings out there that are constructed of wood, so what is it about timber framing that makes it a unique way to build?
In its essence, timber framing is a structural framing method using large timbers fastened together using wooden joinery. The most iconic joint used is called the mortise and tenon. The mortise is the notch, or hole made in the receiving member, with the tenon being a part of the adjoining timber that is inserted into the mortise. This type of joinery is often fastened together using hardwood pegs. This is different than post-and-beam, as a post-and-beam structure uses metal hardware to link the heavy timbers together.
A timber frame house offers many benefits that one might not find in a conventionally built home using today’s 2×4 methods. For one, the use of large timbers permits longer spans, resulting in more open floor plans and a adaptability hard to achieve when interior load-bearing walls are needed. Second, the timber structural components exposed to the interior of the building offer a sense of shelter, as you can see and feel the timber frame providing protection over-head. Wood is considered a ‘warm’ material by interior designers, used to enhance the intimateness of a space.
Third, the inherent beauty in the craftsmanship of timber framing means these buildings are awe-inspiring; they are revered and preserved for future generations. That in itself is an important part of creating a sustainable built-environment. Finally, timber framing as a construction method is approachable. Sure, it takes a lot of skill to fashion the joinery, but human-kind’s deep-rooted (pun intended) history and relationship with wood as a building material brings a certain familiarity. Anyone can learn how to timber frame if they put the time in, but more importantly it doesn’t take any extra effort to appreciate the beauty of a finely-crafted timber frame building.
